Kokrajhar, April 27: The Kokrajhar district administration ordered a magisterial inquiry into the gangrape of a married woman allegedly by personnel of the army’s 15 Dogra Regiment in Tharai-bari village under Kokrajhar police station in the district, seven days after the incident.

The order was given by Kokrajhar deputy commissioner Donald Gilfellon following pressure mounted by various organisations. The deputy commissioner has given 20 days’ time to complete the investigation.

Several women’s organisations, including the Bodo Women Justice Forum, All- India Democratic Woman Association and senior citizens of Kokrajhar today met Gilfellon and submitted a memorandum demanding arrest and punishment of the “security personnel”, a copy of which was also sent to the Union home ministry.

A separate memorandum was also submitted by various Bodo organisations, including Absu, Bodo Sahitya Sabha, Bodo Samaj, Tribal Sangha and so on.

Later, talking to reporters, the women’s group expressed dissatisfaction about the way the incident was being handled by police and the civil administration.

“It is surprising that it took a week for the administration to order for a probe. We have been given 20 days’ time by the deputy commissioner. We will wait till then and decide the next course of action till justice is done, said Anjali Daimary, president of the Bodo Women’s Justice Forum.

The victim had said she was raped by two soldiers while four more pinned her down around 7.30pm at her house on April 20 in the absence of her husband.

She said six men in civvies had forcefully entered her house and two of them took turns to rape her.

The army has denied the allegations.
