Imphal, Nov. 24: Officials of the Narcotics and Affairs of Borders (NAB) and members of United Committee, Manipur (UCM), an NGO, yesterday seized a huge quantity of tablets abused as intoxicants from an Imphal West post office.

Acting on a tip-off that the consignment could contain tablets used as intoxicants, the officials and members of the UCM seized a carton which came from Delhi. The NAB officials could not open it immediately yesterday without the permission of a magistrate. However, 12,400 strips of Actiman tablets were found after the carton was opened today.

NAB officials said Actiman, also known as pseudoephedrine, is used for processing heroin powder and the tablet was abused by drug addicts. The consignment was sent from Delhi to Dr Wingson Anal at an address near the state fisheries department at Lamphel in Imphal West.

“We and officials of the NAB searched for the consignment at the address mentioned on the consignment. But there is no one called Dr Wingson Anal. Both the name and address were fictitious,” Y. Nabachandra, president of UCM, said.

The officer-in-charge of NAB, Imphal office, Bikram Singh, said investigations were on to find out the recipient of the drug.

The NAB officials and UCM leaders said despite recent seizures of such tablets from post offices, the drugs continued to come in.

Special intelligence unit of Manipur police seized 2,500 strips of Spasmoproxyvon tablets from Imphal head post office on August 22 this year.

“It was fortunate that we could detect the consignment on time yesterday. There could be several cases where drugs sent to Manipur post offices were delivered to smugglers and they were circulated among youths,” Nabachandra said.

He hinted at the involvement of some employees of the postal department and demanded that a tight vigil should be kept by government agencies over the functioning of the post offices in Manipur.
