Six held in Dhubri for gambling

The area has already been declared a containment zone following the detection of a Covid-19 case

Police have arrested six persons for gambling in College Nagar of Dhubri town while a lockdown is in place to contain the spread of coronavirus, officials said on Tuesday.

The area has already been declared a containment zone by the district administration following the detection of a Covid-19 positive case in the Jhagrarpar area on April 13. Accordingly, the entry and exit of any person in the locality have been totally restricted.

During a raid conducted by a police team, led by deputy superintendent of police (headquarters), Dhubri, Trinayan Bhuyan, on Zeus Club near Bhola Nath College, the six persons were found gambling and arrested on the spot. The club premises had been sealed, the police said.

A case (number 412/2020) has been registered at Dhubri Sadar police station under Sections 188 (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant)/269 (Negligent act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life)/34. (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of IPC and relevant sections of the Assam Gambling Act.

The accused have been identified as Ankur Roy, Samiran Chandra Mondal, Manoj Das, Somobhik Das, Shankar Das and Bimal Mondal. They have been remanded in judicial custody.

In another drive, the police have arrested one person from Gauripur town for allegedly running a hotel amid the lockdown.

The accused has been identified as Sekendra Ali.
