Two arrested

Police arrested two persons from Ma Tara Hotel in Paltan Bazar and seized 50gm of powder, suspected to be heroin, from them on Sunday. The police have sent the powder to the Forensic Science Laboratory for tests.

Thief held

Police arrested Bashir Ali, 30, on Sunday on charges of stealing jewellery from the house of Baidyanath Das, a resident of Bapuji Nagar. The accused hails from Lanka in Nagaon district.

Found dead

Baikuntha Malakar, 30, was found dead at his rented house in Satgaon on Sunday. Police suspect that Malakar may have died after he fell from the bed and sustained head injuries.

Ganja seized

Police arrested Ramdhan Mehta, 27, and Santosh Gupta, 25, and seized 25kg ganja from them on Sunday. The two were on their way to the railway station to take the ganja to Bihar when they were arrested in Dispur.

Accident

A 19-year-old girl from Lutuma, Sujita Adhikari, died after she fell into a pond in Rupnagar, where she had come to meet her relatives, on Sunday. Police said preliminary investigation suggests that the girl may have accidentally slipped into the pond.

Conference

The Don Bosco Institute, Guwahati, is organising a three-day national-level conference of schoolteachers from Monday.

Felicitation

The AASU on Sunday felicitated Nabanita Chakrabarty, who bagged the 16th position in the Union Public Service Commission Examination.

Laptop theft

Police arrested four members of a gang involved in laptop thefts in raids carried out in Paltan Bazar and Sarabbhati on Sunday. One stolen laptop was also recovered from them.

Seminar

A seminar on diagnosis and management of diabetes was held at Hotel Pragoti Manor on Saturday.

Drive

Members of the Society for Promotion of Tourism, Guwahati, under took a cleaning drive in Umananda on Saturday.

Book release

Former president of Asam Sahitya Sabha Lakshminandan Bora released the Assamese version of the Geeta at a function held at the Vivekananda Kendra Institute of Culture at Uzan Bazar recently.

Philanthropy

The Haren Deka and Uttara Deka Sowarani Sewa Samiti distributed mekhela chadors among poor women at a function held recently at Kumarpara Oakland English High School.
