Rehabilitation centre visited

Maj. Gen. B.K. Chengappa, Inspector General, Assam Rifles (South), visited Gamnuam Christian Home at Phailen (Lamka), Churachandpur on October 31. Gamnuam Christian Home, a drug de-addiction and rehabilitation centre, was set up in 1993 under the initiative of Gen. Chengappa, who was then commanding officer of 14 Garhwal Rifles.

He was accorded a warm welcome by the general administrator D. Zenkhonoumaou and members of Gamnuam Christian Home wherein 49 men and four women are at present undergoing rehabilitation.

He extended financial assistance to the organisation and also distributed sweets. The members interacted with Gen. Chengappa and expressed their gratitude to him.

To mark the occasion, a cultural programme was organised jointly by 13 Assam Rifles and the people of Ukhrul. It was attended by leaders of social organisations, NGOs, top district officials and a large number of Army and Assam Rifles ex-servicemen, besides local residents of Ukhrul.

The centre conducts training in tailoring, carpentry, candle making, pottery and weaving. It also has a salon.

An information room has also been established with general information for higher studies, competitive exams and recruitment in the Assam Rifles, Army and Nursing Corps.

The premises will also be utilised to hold regular exhibitions of rural handicrafts.

Gen. Chengappa thanked the audience for their overwhelming participation and said a warm relationship between local people and security forces was the “need of the hour”.

Infantry day

For every infantryman in the army, October 27 is a day of celebration and re-dedication to his cause.

On this day, infantry regiments celebrate Infantry Day. at the headquarters of the 4 Corps at Tezpur, Maj. Gen. S.C. Sharma, officiating GOC of Gajraj Corps, launched the celebrations by laying wreaths at the war memorial in the Corps Headquarters Complex as a mark of respect to martyrs.

Lt Gen. R.K. Chhabra, GOC, Gajraj Corps, greeted all infantrymen on the occasion.

The message pointed out “with pride and satisfaction” that the heroic heritage of the infantry remains as glorious as ever.

A barakhana was held in the evening for all officers, junior commissioned officers (JCOs) and jawans. The occasion was marked by great pomp.

On this day 58 years ago, the first infantryman landed at Srinagar and repulsed the Razakars from the vicinity of Srinagar airfield. Srinagar was thus saved.

This was the first glorious action fought by the Indian army immediately after Independence.

The infantry proved its mettle during the Kargil conflict and is justifiably proud of the fact that it has fulfilled all its commitments with tenacity, perseverance and courage in the highest traditions of the army.

Awards

Awards and accolades keep pouring in for the little achievers of Army School, Tezpur.

Kalabharati Art Development Institute recently conducted a national-level painting competition for Classes I to III. Gayatri Saha of Class I, Ranbir Paul of Class II and Tina Hazarika of Class III were awarded the Kalagaurav Award for their entries. Seventy students participated in this competition and received certificates of excellence from the Pune-based institute.

The students also showcased their skills by decorating diyas.

A competition was held at the Army School to develop creativity in children of Classes I, II and III. The youngsters enthusiastically participated in the competition, which was held around Diwali.

They decorated earthen lamps and crafted environment-friendly diyas with papaya and elephant apples. Eleshan Krishnaitra received the special appreciation award.

Then it was time for the school to host the inter-Army School cluster I debate and quiz competition on October 27 at its Vividha Hall.

The chief guest was Col. R.S. Minhas, education officer of 4 Corps. The teams participating in the competition were the Army Schools at Tezpur, Jorhat, Dinjan and Missamari.

The quiz was conducted by Shehnaz Vania. Army School, Dinjan won the quiz and Army School, Tezpur was the runners-up.

The topic of the debate was We Are More Civilised Than Our Forefathers. Army School, Tezpur won the debate and Army School, Dinjan were the runners-up.

The individual winners in the debate were Purnanjay Sharma and Yamini Jain.

Raising Day

The Intelligence Corps units of the Gajraj Corps celebrated their 64th Raising Day on November 1. The Indian Intelligence Corps came into existence on this day in 1942. Lt Gen. R.K. Chhabra, GOC of Gajraj Corps, conveyed his greetings to all Intelligence Corps personnel on this occasion.

The corps has been transformed a great deal over the years. It has achieved high standards of proficiency in performing its operational role, both in war and peace.

The corps comprises highly motivated officers, junior commissioned officers and personnel of other ranks who carry out their tasks in the most difficult of terrain, providing information of immediate and long-term importance to the army.

Assam Rifles housing project

Assam Rifles (AR) has started a project for construction of quarters to house families of officers, junior commissioned officers (JCOs) and jawans at Dwarka in Delhi. The complex will be located in the Institutional Housing Complex area at Sector 17, Dwarka.

Lt Gen. Paramjit Singh, Director General of Assam Rifles, while laying the foundation stone on October 29, said the houses for AR personnel would be allotted to the families of the force deployed in the insurgency-affected areas of the Northeast.This complex will be of immense help to families whose children want to pursue higher studies in Delhi.

It would also help families who require specialised medical treatment. In phase one, 16 quarters for JCOs and 32 quarters for jawans and a hostel to cater for 30 boys and 16 girl students will be constructed.

In phase two, 16 Officers, 16 JCOs and 32 jawans’ accommodation will be constructed. The project will be completed by October 2008.
