Shillong, Sept. 9: The BSNL in Meghalaya today launched three new broadband data and voice plans in a bid to compete with private operators while announcing that work is under way to improve network connectivity across the state.

BSNL general manager (telecom) N. Sujatha said the broadband plans of 249, 499 and 1,199 are available for existing and new customers. Under the 1,199 plan, customers would be able to make free landline calls to any network across the country.

Stating that the existing BSNL broadband subscriber base in Meghalaya is around 8,300, Sujatha said work is under way to improve mobile and broadband connectivity in the state.

"We are installing New Generation Network (remote switching unit) in various localities so that we can improve the services. We are trying our best to reduce interruptions," she said.

At the same time, Sujatha said more mobile towers would be set up in the state to improve network connectivity.

"BSNL 3G expansion in Meghalaya is going on in a big way," she said.

BSNL currently has 242 2G and 124 3G mobile towers across the state. By December-January, around 51 new mobile towers (3G) would be erected, she said.

The current mobile subscriber base of BSNL in Meghalaya include 1.9 lakh prepaid customers and 30,000 post-paid users. There are also 19,000 fixed line customers.
