Guwahati, Nov. 25: Bamboo-based products developed in the Northeast will now find a market in the northern state of Uttaranchal too.

?We can buy each other?s products,? Uttaranchal forest and environment minister Nav Prabhat said at a meeting here last evening.

In a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed at the meeting by officials of the Cane and Bamboo Technology Centre, Guwahati, and the Uttaranchal Bamboo and Fibre Development Board, it was also decided that the two regions would share their knowledge in the bamboo sector.

The meeting was also attended by officials of the Cane and Bamboo Technology Centre of Uttaranchal, the Bamboo and Fibre Development Board, the North Eastern Council and the Assam forest department.

Prabhat said the accord was an excellent case of inter-state cooperation. Pointing out the various other ways in which the two regions could cooperate, the minister said they could join hands for a better future as both the regions had a hilly terrain and shared the problems arising out of it and put pressure on the Centre for development.

?If you have Kaziranga, we have Jim Corbett and there can be package tour for the wildlife enthusiasts also,? Prabhat told this correspondent.

The start to the cooperation was made at Bamtech in Shillong this year when Uttaranchal was invited to showcase its bamboo sector.

The minister said bamboo had already been planted in 5,000 hectares in the seven districts of the state. ?Bamboo is an important factor in community development programme,? he added.

Uttaranchal has a unique bamboo and biofuel-based public-private partnership model which operates on ?plant, maintain and earn? basis. According to the MoU signed yesterday, the state will transfer the knowledge of its models and other knowhow to the Northeast through the Cane and Bamboo Technology Centre. The centre, which has access to skilled craftspersons, shall help to carry out the exchange programmes between the Northeast and Uttaranchal.
