Guwahati, Oct. 3: Legendary folk singer Pratima Barua Pandey, known for her immortal Goalpariya songs, will come alive on the silver screen across Assam as her biopic Sonar Baran Pakhi (The Golden Wing) is set to release on November 24.

The biopic has been screened at 19 international film festivals, producer- director Bobby Sarma Baruah said.

Jointly produced by the Assam State Film Finance and Development Corporation Ltd (ASFFDC), Basanta Kumar Baruah and Bobby Sarma Baruah, the release date of the film was declared on the occasion of the singer's 83rd birth anniversary today.

It is the first film in Rajbongshi language, a community mainly settled in lower Assam.

'The film traces the journey of the singer, who hailed from Dhubri and faced immense hardship in establishing the precious and unique music of a small community. We started working on the film in 2015 and completed it last year,' Baruah told The Telegraph.

Explaining her intention to make the film, the producer-director said, 'Pratima Barua Pandey is definitely the golden feather of Goalpariya folk songs of western Assam. She shed the silver spoon that was hers by birth and unhesitatingly mingled with boatmen, buffalo herders and mahouts - bearers of traditional songs - to come up with a repertoire that she flawlessly and soulfully rendered at various forums to earn nationwide recognition for this distinct folk form.'

The Rs 35-lakh film is going to be released in nearly 30 cinema halls of Assam and Bengal. At the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles and Dhaka International Film Festival, it had won the grand jury prize for best feature film and best audience award respectively.

Baruah also said the film will contain seven songs, which are in the singer's original voice and collected from the archive of All-India Radio Guwahati where she was a regular.

The film has been shot in Gauripur, where Pandey spent her entire life, Calcutta, Manas National Park and Guwahati.

ASSFFDC chairman Jatin Bora said people should watch the biopic as it highlights an important cultural texture of Assam.
