Guwahati, Nov. 2: Two Assam boys and as many girls from the state made it to the round of eight in the ongoing Asian Junior (under-14) ranking tennis tournament at the Jorhat Tennis Club courts in Jorhat.
In the boys’ singles pre-quarterfinals today, Amlandjyoti Barua came back from a set behind to overcome fellow state player Abhinandan Das 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 while Parikshit Somani made short work of another Assam lad, Uddis Borpuzari, 6-0, 6-2 to book quarter-final berths.
The other quarter-finalists are Maharashtra boys Nikhil Passi and Aryan Goveas, Vishu Prasad, Sahil Sehwag and Sahil Deshmukh of Delhi and Kerala boy Anirudh Jaindhan.
Passi blanked out Assam opponent Abhishek Kakati 6-0, 6-0, Goveas defeated Assam boy Archis Borthakur for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 win, Prasad tamed Karan Mehta of Maharashtra 6-1, 6-2, Sehwag beat Assam lad Partha Konwar 6-4, 6-4, Jaindhan sailed past Madhurjya Pegu of Assam 6-0, 6-2 and Deshmukh beat Gaigang Pamei of Nagaland 6-2, 6-0.
In the girls’ singles courts, Assam girls Jayati Sarma and Pratiksha Sarma eased into the quarters. Jayati Sarma prevailed over another Assam girl, Rudraxee Bharali, 6-4, 6-2 while Pratiksha Sarma got the better of Nazia Ahmed (Assam) 6-2, 6-1.
In the other pre-quarterfinal encounters, Andhra girl Devanshi Bhimjiyani blanked out Darshana Kashyap of Assam 6-0, 6-0, Riya Vardhan of Maharashtra beat Maitry Phukan of Assam 6-3, 6-0, Jennifer Luikham of Delhi sailed past Priyana Kalita (Assam) 6-3, 6-4, Nidhi Surapaneni (Andhra) eased past Suranjita Saikia (Assam) 6-1, 6-0, Anjali Jaindhan (Kerala) tamed Himarani Basumatary (Assam) 6-4, 6-0 and Aboli Goghari (Maharashtra) got the better of Murchana Sahariya (Assam) 6-4, 6-2.
