Ashok Kumar finishes first

Guwahati, Feb. 4: Ashok Kumar displayed some thrill-ing golf enroute to card a 14-under-par, 274 to win the Rs 20-lakh Indian Oil Xtra Premium Masters Golf Tournament that concluded at the Digboi Golf Course on Saturday.

The winner was decided after four days of gruelling golf on the undulating Digboi Course.

One of the most consistent professional golfers on the domestic tour, Shamim Khan along with promising youngster Vikrant Chopra tied for the second position at eight-under-par, 280.

Chopra carded his best finish on the domestic professional circuit on Saturday.

Yusuf Ali finished sole fourth at 281, while Shankar Das was fifth with 283. Bangalore’s golfing stars, C. Muniyapa and S. Madaiah finished sixth at four-under-par for the week.

Tournament favourite Vijay Kumar was a stroke behind and finished eighth along with Delhi’s Vinod Kumar, after both finished the meet with similar totals of three-under-par, 285.

Digboi golfer Ajay Barua, an employee of IndianOil, won the amateur prize.

He carded a four-over-par, 76 yesterday taking his total to 301.

Pro-Am title

Rafick Ali and his team — G.K. Goyari, Sq. Ldr Naveen Rana and U.C. Paul — annexed the Pro-Am title held on Sunday with a total of 110 points.

A.S. Lehal helped his team of Vivek Seth, D.K. Bordoloi and A. Roy to claim the runners-up prize with 108 points, while Manav Jaini along with H. Ahmed, Utpal Deka and Munim Sharma finished second runners-up with a total of 107 points.

The crème de la crème of Digboi’s golfing society participated in the Pro-Am competition which was toughly contested. Altogether 24 teams participated in the Pro-Am competition, played according to the Stableford format.

Wg Cdr N.K. Pillia and B.S. Saklani, both of whom hit their tee shot just six feet 11 inches from the pin on the par-three 16th hole bagged the prize for the closest to the pin. D. Roy won the prize for the longest drive on the 13th hole after he hit his drive to 280 yards.

The prize for Best Stableford Amateur (not winning a team prize) was won by O.P. Chetry, who scored 38 points. Bipul Gogoi was runners-up with 37 points while A. Borgohain was the second runner-up with a total of 36 points.
