Guwahati, May 6: A day after claiming the under-19 singles, Guwahati girl Anjali Kalita annexed two more titles to wind up her campaign with three crowns in the Subudh Chandra Das all-Assam ranking badminton championship here today.
Anjali today lifted the women’s and under-16 singles crowns in the tournament, organised by the Guwahati Sports Association. She beat Manali Sinha 11-7, 11-6 in the women’s final and Pizza Bharali of Dibrugarh 11-1, 11-6 in the under-16. Despite starting on a positive note, Anjali was made to sweat it out by Manali in the women’s clash. Yesterday, she beat the same opponent for the under-19 crown.
Ajanta Choudhury of Guwahati claimed the men’s singles, crushing citymate Rajeeb Goswami 15-4, 15-0 in the final. Ajanta entered the final beating teammate Pankaj Rajkhowa 15-5, 15-11, while Rajeeb beat his doubles partner Amitabh Goswami 5-15, 15-3, 15-5 in the semi-finals.
The Rajeeb-Amitabh duo took revenge in the doubles, beating Bhaskar Bora and Ajanta 9-15, 15-4, 15-12.
Rajeeb, despite the loss in the men’s singles, had a good time on the courts, claiming the under-19 boys’ singles. He got the better of Suranjan Bhobora of Guwahati 15-6, 15-3 in the final.
Javed T. Halim teamed up with Ankur Baruah to cruise past Suranjan Bhobora and Naharkatiya’s Dibyajyoti Baruah for the under-19 doubles title. In the semi-finals, Suranjan and Dibyajyoti prevailed over Uttam Baruah and Mausamraj Gohain of Sivasagar 15-2, 15-4, while Javed and Ankur outplayed Anirban Chetia of Naharkatiya and Rajeeb Goswami 15-10, 15-8.
Suranjan won the boys’ under-16 singles beating Souravjyoti Bora of Guwahati 15-5, 15-13 in the final.
Sports minister Robin Bordoloi and Subudh Chandra Das’s widow Anjula Das gave mementoes to the winners at the closing ceremony. Bordoloi said over Rs 1 crore would be spent to renovate the Kanaklata and Abita indoor stadiums for the 2005 National Games.
More than 150 players from 12 affiliated districts of the Assam Badminton Association participated in this tournament.
The winners, runners-up and semi-finalists have earned ranking points.
