Guwahati, March 28: KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi underwent a comprehensive medical check-up at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) today.
The court of the additional district and sessions judge, Kamrup (metro), yesterday ruled that Akhil should be admitted to GMCH as he was reportedly suffering from chronic back pain. The ruling further said the medical reports should be produced in court on Saturday.
GMCH superintendent Ramen Talukdar told this correspondent that Akhil underwent various medical tests at the medicine, orthopaedics, urology, neurosurgery and gastroenterology departments. The test results will be available tomorrow, he said.
“A team of doctors from different departments examined Akhil. He does not require hospitalisation at this time. We will take a call after going through his medical reports tomorrow. If required, he might have to again come to the hospital for more tests,” Talukdar said.
“Since doctors at GMCH did not advise hospitalisation, the police took Akhil to jail after the medical investigations were completed. The media was not allowed to interact with him,” a source said.
Akhil, who is facing various charges, is currently lodged at Guwahati Central Jail.
Yesterday, the court remanded Akhil to judicial custody in connection with two cases lodged in Khetri police station here. In these two cases, Akhil was accused of committing offences under Sections 4 and 5 of the Assam Land Grabbing (Prohibition Act, 2010).
Akhil yesterday shouted outside the court that he was being held so that chief minister Tarun Gogoi’s son, Gaurav, could win the elections.
In a press communiqué issued here this evening, the KMSS alleged that Dispur had asked GMCH authorities not to hospitalise Akhil so that he could be lodged in jail for some more time. “Despite suffering from severe back pain we do not understand why GMCH doctors refused to hospitalise Akhil. It is a ploy to destroy Akhil both physically and mentally,” KMSS publicity secretary Dhorjya Konwar said.
