Guwahati, June 29: Qualifier Abhinandan Das of Assam today shocked fifth seed Yuvraj Bains of West Bengal 4-2, 4-0 on the second day of the Indian Oil AITA Championship Series Tennis Tournament under way at the Chachal Tennis Complex here since yesterday.

After the first day’s play was washed out because of incessant rain yesterday, the under-14 boys’ singles courts witnessed the major upset of the day when Das scored an easy victory over Bains in the first round.

In the other categories it was smooth sailing for the seeded players.

A record number of 175 players from nine states — Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Nagaland and host Assam — are participating in this tournament. Ranked 17th in India, Madhurjya Dutta of Assam is the top seed in the boys’ under-16 age group.

All doubles matches of the tournament had to be cancelled because of the loss of one day’s play. All the finals will be played on Friday.
