Manipur cyclist Rohan Philem is all set to reach another milestone in his campaign for persons with disabilities, with a 10,000km international tour from New Delhi to Tokyo from February 16.

This will be 25-year-old Rohan’s first international cycle tour. He has already pedalled his way from New Delhi to Imphal and Kashmir to Kanyakumari last year to spread awareness on pollution and to campaign for the girl child.

The upcoming tour will uphold the theme of humanity, rights and voices as part of the 2020 Japan Ride.

Another state lad, Ji Ingobi Chingtham, rode from Imphal to Singapore on November 21, 2019 on the theme of Global Integration, Respect Your Identity and Women Empowerment.

Rohan’s solo ride is aimed at raising awareness on the rights of the persons with disabilities in connection with the commencement of the 2020 Summer Paralympics, Tokyo.

Consumer affairs and public distribution minister Karam Shyam, also an avid cyclist, said, “We need to encourage asuch youths who have brought laurels for the state. It is a proud moment that Rohan will create an identity for Manipur by carrying the seven salai (clan) flag while crossing several countries en route to Tokyo.”

Appreciating the two for their outstanding feats and indomitable courage, he said he had financially supported both the cyclists in their endeavours.

Shyam said he was determined to cycle to his office every Thursday and spread the message among the people of Manipur about the benefits of cycling.

Rohan hails from Moirang Philem Leikai, Bishnupur district, while Ji Ingobi Chingtham, 21, lives in Khongjom Sapam Mayai Leikai in Thoubal district.
