Few Indian comedians enjoy a global audience like Vir Das. Despite his stellar repertoire, it is truly remarkable to see an Indian artiste sell out the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, which has hosted legends like Dave Chappelle and Jerry Seinfeld.
Das used his platform to perform a heartwarming piece that spoke about the two Indias he lives in. He lamented about how there exists an India that is sexist, ignorant and divided, parallel to an India that is respectful, righteous and inclusive. Although Das didn’t shy away from holding a mirror to the not-so-beautiful aspects of Indian society, he also instilled hope with the persevering parallels.
The ending, which features a packed Kennedy Center on its feet, applauding their hearts out for the India they wish to live in, makes us believe that there is hope after all.
