The year 2023 has seen a definite shift in the films being made in India, with most big hits being high-octane action thrillers. However, one film has towered above the rest with its simplicity, telling a deeply human story. This Republic Day, dive into 12th Fail, a moving story of IPS officer Manoj Kumar Sharma, based on the 2019 book by Anurag Pathak, which was adapted for screen by Vidhu Vinod Chopra.
Vikrant Massey is a revelation as Sharma, a boy who grew up in dacoit-infested Chambal, failed Class XII, endured intense poverty and worked as a labourer in a mill, while studying for India’s toughest competitive exam, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). Through inspiring hard work and unrelenting honesty, Sharma not only manages to realise his dream, but one that is shared by crores of Indians.
Streaming on Hotstar, this film proves that the strongest thing in the world is the will to succeed.
