‘The Tragedy of Macbeth’ trailer
Joel Coen’s Macbeth gets the horror treatment

A new trailer for Joel Coen's The Tragedy of Macbeth just dropped and the director seems to have settled on a grim, noir approach for his Shakesperean adaptation. Coen wrote and directed the black and white film that stars Denzel Washington in the role of Macbeth and Frances McDormand as Lady Macbeth, alongside Bertie Carvel, Corey Hawkins, Harry Melling, and Brendan Gleeson.
The 1:39-minute trailer relies on some stark imagery and some haunting visual elements that resemble the high-contrast settings of German expressionism. “I wanted to do Shakespeare for people who don’t want to see Shakespeare, or who might even be intimidated by it. But I wanted to preserve the power of the text because that’s the melody of the thing – and I wanted to figure out how to get the rhythm that goes relentlessly through the whole thing like a murder movie,” Coen said recently.
