‘Ei poth jodi na shesh hoy, tobey kemon hoto tumi bolo toh?’... Uttam Kumar and Suchitra Sen waltzed through the silver screen on a motorcycle six decades ago. Be it 1961 or 2021, Rina and Krishnendu’s defiant romance makes for timeless cinema. The Ajoy Kar film explored an interfaith relationship between a Bengali Hindu boy and a Christian girl against the backdrop of pre-independent India and also featured powerhouse actors like Chhabi Biswas, Chhaya Devi and Utpal Dutt (in an unforgettable voice-over as Othello). Moreover, Hemanta Kumar’s melody, Gauriprasanna Mauzumdar’s lyrics, and Tarasankar Bandyopadhyay’s story-telling make this film a near-perfect cinematic experience.
