Sunday Classics: ‘The Addams Family’
The supernatural black comedy turns 30 this month

Despite being based on a TV show, which was in turn based on a cartoon strip, there is a distinct sense of originality in the 1991 adaptation of The Addams Family, one that isn’t lost even 30 years after its original release.
While the premise is simple — a corrupt lawyer plants a fake family member to wedge out money from the Addams — it is the writing that truly sets this black comedy apart. The film is packed with audacious humour, each character is fleshed-out, and the actors amplify the script with their comedic brilliance. Director Barry Sonnenfeld manages to find the perfect note of madcap humour without the film feeling too loud and scattered.
Watch this for the gags without thinking too much, and you have a breezy Sunday afternoon on your hands!
