Bengali cinema has produced some of the most notable actors to ever grace the silver screen. Amongst them is Rabi Ghosh. With brilliant comic timing, this screen and theatre stalwart has made a special place in the hearts of audiences. On the week of his 90th birth anniversary, which was on November 24, we list three of his must-watch films.

Galpo Holeo Satti: This 1966 classic that made us laugh and sent a strong social message, was directed by one of Bengali cinema’s finest Tapan Sinha. Rabi Ghosh plays Dhananjoy, who enters a dysfunctional home as domestic help. With Dhanajoy at the crux, the narrative tackles social and domestic issues through the lives of the many characters in a large joint family, all while their quirks make us chuckle. The movie was remade in many languages, the most famous being Rajesh Khanna-starrer Bawarchi (1972).

Mauchaak: Directed by revered Bengali filmmaker Arabinda Mukherjee, this 1974 film sees comedy legends Rabi Ghosh, Chinmoy Roy and Anup Kumar together. One of the most-loved scenes from the star studded film is of Rabi Ghosh and love-interest Ratna Ghoshal having a romantic banter seated on a sofa. “Ami dopani, tumi gadha” is still used as a comeback sometimes. Apanjan: Rabi Ghosh’s satirical take on politicians and politics became an instant hit in this 1968 Tapan Sinha classic. Playing the role of aging politician, Haru Chakraborty, Ghosh’s portrayal of a tactful, power-hungry leader resonated with many. Watch it on Jio Cinema
