Andrew Fleming’s 1996 supernatural horror The Craft was a milestone for mainstream feminist filmmaking. The story about four young occult-curious high school students expanded upon the metaphor of teen angst without making fun of it. Fleming and Peter Filardi’s script also tackles isolation, trauma and misogyny in a subtle but distinct way. The film starring Neve Campbell,
Fairuza Balk, Robin Tunney and Rachel True earned a cult following upon its release and marks its 25th anniversary on May 3.
The film follows sophomores Nancy (Fairuza Balk), Bonnie (Neve Campbell) and Rochelle (Rachel True) who explore various facets of amateur witchcraft and believe they have a gift. Their Catholic school coven finds a fourth member when they find a natural witch in newcomer Sarah (Robin Tunney).
