Netflix’s newest offering, tick, tick...BOOM! delves into the unrelenting genius of playwright Jonathan Larson, who is not deterred by poverty in the pursuit of his own magnum opus that will revolutionise musical theatre.
At the centre of the narrative is an earnest Andrew Garfield, who makes director Lin-Manuel Miranda’s vision of Larson come to life. The actor manages to hold his own in the singing department too, a Herculean task considering Larson was the man behind the pathbreaking Rent. The film also has enough cameos from celebrated thespians to keep theatre enthusiasts hooked throughout. Despite addressing his untimely death at the beginning of the film, the music and editing keep the significance of a ticking clock intact.
In the end, it isn’t the filmmaking technique that makes tick, tick...BOOM! Worth a watch, it's the celebration of one’s audacity to aspire, and achieve.
