Netflix’s Big Mouth has worked out the balance between gleeful comedy and a nuanced exploration of puberty. After introducing breakthrough concepts like hormone monsters, shame wizards and anxiety bugs, the show just introduced Walter the lovebug, voiced by Brandon Kyle Goodman, who encourages Nick to pursue his feelings for Jessi (Jessi Klein). But after Jessi rejects him, Walter transforms into a hate worm and takes Nick on a rather dark journey. The cast comprising Nick Kroll, John Mulaney, Jason Mantzoukas and Maya Rudolph is an absolute riot. The season also provides a lot of relatable reassurance about the torrid years of growing up in school, and delves into the complexities of mental health, sexuality, friendships and family.
