The match against Kochi Blue Spikers will decide who Thunderbolts will face in the PVL semi-finals

The Kolkata Thunderbolts, partnered by The Telegraph My Kolkata, have officially become the fourth and final team to book their place in the semi-finals of the inaugural season of the RuPay Prime Volleyball League (PVL). A win for the Ahmedabad Defenders over the Kochi Blue Spikers on Tuesday sealed Kolkata's spot, but the Thunderbolts still have the chance to improve their standing in the league table.
Should Kolkata break their two-match losing streak to condemn Kochi to their second defeat in as many days, they will rise to the second spot in the table. This will pave the way for an encounter against Calicut in the final four. Meanwhile, a defeat for Kolkata against Kochi will mean settling for the fourth spot and a meeting with table-toppers Ahmedabad in the semi-finals.
Regardless of the permutations and combinations, the Thunderbolts will go into the game desperate to taste victory once again. It will be interesting to see whether coach Sunny Joseph opts to rest some of his key players, including captain Ashwal Rai, who is yet to return to full fitness. While the match may be a dead rubber for Kochi, their spirited effort against the Defenders should indicate another tough match for Kolkata, who will be keen to wrap up the round-robin stage in style.
