In what is India’s second consecutive triumph at Cannes, director Shaunak Sen’s documentary, All That Breathes was awarded the L’Oeil d’Or (Golden Eye) at the 75th edition of the film festival.
The film follows two brothers, Mohammad Saud and Nadeem Shehzad, who treat migratory black kites that are being put to test by Delhi’s trying ecological environment. Alongside, the brothers and their family are put to test by Delhi’s chaotic social environment. What emerges from the juxtaposition of these narratives is a story about compassion and empathy. As the Cannes citation said, it is “a film that, in a world of destruction, reminds us that every life matters.” The 90-minute film was hailed as a favourite to win the award, which comes with a cash prize of EUR5,000.
