The 95th Academy Awards got an Indian flavour this year. While Naatu Naatu from RRR bagged Best Original Song, The Elephant Whisperers won Best Documentary Short Subject. The latter became the first Indian production ever to win an Oscar, spearheaded by two women nonetheless — Guneet Monga as producer and Kartiki Gonsalves as director. The cast and crew of the two films turned up in their Indian best and the red carpet saw saris and bandhgalas shine. The desi magic didn’t end with the accolades, as Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava recreated a powerful live rendition of Naatu Naatu at the ceremony, introduced by none other than Deepika Padukone, who stunned in a custom-made black Louis Vuitton gown and Cartier jewels. If this year’s Oscars are a sign for things to come, India cinema is shining brighter on an international platform, and as Pdukone said in her red-carpet interview, “It’s the tip of the iceberg.” so here’s looking at greater and grander things to come.
