Gandharir Deshe by Ramesh C. Chanda is a comprehensive account of Afghanistan that delves into the social, cultural and political history of the country and its people. Written in Bengali, the book is divided into 17 succinct chapters, each of which spotlights the various aspects of life in Afghanistan. While the range of topics covered include general historical discussions about ancient and medieval Afghanistan and its later years of turmoil, certain chapters also narrow down on society and family life in Kabul, which is where the author was stationed. Posted by the United Nations, Chanda's job in Kabul involved setting up the Central Statistical Office to gather Afghanistan's first official census. His stay in the Afghan capital coincided with the years of turmoil that began with the outbreak of the Soviet-Afghan War in 1979.
Weaving together history, politics and day-to-day experiences from the author’s 3-year stay in the country, Gandharir Deshe is a rare first-hand insight into Afghanistan, which effortlessly mingles societal realities with personal reflections.
The book is available at the International Kolkata Book Fair and can also be purchased online.
