Saturday Night Live kicked off its first show after a short hiatus, with host John Mulaney. The show showed its support to the people of Ukraine with a powerful choral version of Prayer for Ukraine by Ukrainian Chorus Dumka of New York, during its cold open segment.
SNL cast members Kate McKinnon and Cecily Strong introduced the chorus performers, who were wearing traditional attire, and sang in front of a table dotted with sunflowers, which is the Ukrainian national flower, and candles that spelled out ‘Kyiv.’ The Weekend Update segment also addressed the Russia-Ukraine crisis. “I’m very impressed by all the Ukrainian citizens signing up to defend their country, even the famous ones. Imagine that here? If you ever read on the news that Michael Che joined an American war, we have just lost that war!” host Michael Che quipped.
