Indie band Florence + the Machine has dropped a single from its fifth studio album, FATM5, which is scheduled to release this spring.
The first single, KING, explores lead singer Florence Welch’s perspective on the dissonance between her femininity and her performing career. “As an artiste, I never actually thought about my gender that much. I just got on with it. I was as good as the men and I just went out there and matched them every time. But now, thinking about being a woman in my 30s and the future … I suddenly feel this tearing of my identity and my desires,” Welch said in the press release.
The powerful track is the group’s first release since 2021’s Call Me Cruella, which was featured on the soundtrack to Disney’s live-action film Cruella. The haunting 5:19 minute video directed by Autumn de Wilde, has already garnered more than 649,000 views within 24 hours.
