Kolkata-based singer-songwriter Diptanshu Roy is one of the few musicians in the city who fell head-over-heels in love with bluegrass and the woody mandolin. On January 23, Roy released Firefly Waltz – a majestic infusion of reminiscing lyrics, fleet-footed strings and sombre vocals. The number features singer-songwriter Aniousha Peicaud.

Firefly Waltz draws inspiration from an escapade that left an indelible mark on Roy. It captures the magic of laying eyes on a sparkle of fireflies in the dead of the night – an enchanting experience. “This song is very personal to me. It’s about Shantiniketan, a place we used to visit all the time that has a very special place in my heart. The experience was magical that day. It was the first time I saw nature light up like that and that’s what I wanted to capture in the song,” smiles Roy.

Dedicated to every nature-lover who has been confined to the walls of their homes over the twin pandemic years, the melancholic tune is punctuated with bursts of buoyant mandolin riffs that perfectly mirror the joy one feels while walking in the wilderness, inhaling the scent of blooming flowers and petrichor, amidst an antagonizing pandemic. Tune in!
