The soundtrack to Euphoria’s second season was designed to convey the drama and the pervading sense of doom and gloom that surrounded the entire season. “Sometimes I get a specific cue – they’re like: ‘OK, we need a piece of music for this scene.’ And they would send me a temporary score, which is an idea of what I need to write. Usually, they have really amazing temp score music, so it fires me up,” said British singer and producer Labrinth who composed the score.
The second season used a bunch of classic songs to emote the anxieties of the characters. In the first episode, during a risky drug deal, Dirty Work by Steely Dan is heard in the background, to showcase Rue and Fez’s state of mind. Bo Diddley’s 1972 track Look at Grandma was used to narrate Fez’s backstory. The song about an unconventional grandmother aligns perfectly with Fez’s own history with his criminal grandmum. The soundtrack also features some timeless ballads such as Lenny Kravitz’s It Ain’t Over Till It’s Over and Jimmy Van Heusen’s catchy track Call Me Irresponsible, which also features in the show’s trailer.
