Waheeda Rehman, who was awarded the Padma Shri in 1972 and Padma Bhushan in 2011, will be honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award this year by the Government of India. It is the highest award in Indian cinema. She is also the recipient of the National Film Award.
Rehman’s films like Pyaasa, Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam and Reshma Aur Shera are still a favourite among cinephiles. Be it in Lamhe or Rang De Basanti, even in a supporting role, the towering talent has left a lasting impact on the audience.
The actress made her cinematic debut with the Telugu film Rojulu Marayi in 1955. In Bollywood, her first film was CID in 1956 opposite Dev Anand. The announcement of Rehman’s Dadasaheb honour took place on Dev Anand’s birth centenary on September 26 and the 85-year-old actress will be felicitated during the National Film Awards.
The other actresses who have received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award are Asha Parekh (2020), Sulochana or Ruby Myers (1973) and Devika Rani Roerich (1969).
