Soon after Bengal’s own Santiniketan got a World Heritage tag, Karnataka’s Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas have found a place on the list. In the 45th session of the World Heritage Committee in Riyadh, UNESCO, the 12th-century heritage temples were inscribed in the World Heritage List 2023.
The site in south India mainly refers to three temple complexes from the 12th and 13th centuries. The Hoysalevara temple in Halebidu, the Keshava temple in Somanathapura, and the Channakeshava temple in Belur. Built during the time of the Hoysala kingdom, the temples with exquisite sculptures and stone carvings on its entire facade are important examples of the distinct Hoysala-style architecture. According to the UNESCO description, the temple complexes “represent a significant stage in the historical development of Hindu temple architecture.”
