Every Kolkatan has an Oly and steak story, and the steak’s always great

Park Street is chock-full of iconic eats but Olypub has a special place. Opened in 1947, at 21 Park Street, it was initially called Olympian Bar and Restaurant and later renamed Olypub in 1981. Kolkatan fondly call it Oly’s.

The most loved dish at Oly’s is the Chateaubriand Beef Steak. The hunk of meat that makes up their portion is well-marinated and seasoned, seared until caramelised and dark, and slathered with an umami packed sauce. Accompanying the star of the plate is a generous helping of mashed potato, almost always coloured by the gravy, and a serving of boiled peas. A sunny-side up fried egg sits on top of the hearty steak. This is the perfect pub grub in a relaxed setting and it’s pocket friendly. There’s little doubt why almost every other person in Kolkata loves Oly’s and has many memories attached to the place. Pair this steak with a tall glass chilled beer to dine like a true Kolkatan.
