On this day the 34th Bengal Native Infantry was disbanded in Barrackpore. This was following sepoy Mangal Pandey’s attack on British officers at Barrackpore on March 29, 1857. This was a key event of the Indian Uprising.
Pandey was sentenced to death and executed on April 8, 1857. But the Uprising spread.
On May 6, the 34th Bengal Native Infantry regiment was disbanded as a punishment, for their failure to restrain Pandey. Several other regiments were punished, and were disarmed or disbanded, for their involvement in the Uprising.
