Nazrul’s had been one of the most strident voices in Bengali poetry.

His poetry is as outspoken about colonial rule as it is about communal harmony. Known as “Bidrohi Kobi” (the rebel poet), he raised his voice against oppression repeatedly. In prison, Nazrul wrote Rajbandir Jabanbandi (Testament of a Political Prisoner). He was one of the major influences on Bangladesh Liberation War.

Bangladesh chose Nazrul its national poet.

He lived in Dhaka from 1972. He died on August 29, 1976.
