On this day, John Anderson took over as Governor of Bengal.

He succeeded Stanley Jackson, who had survived an assassination attempt on him by Bina Das. Anderson, whose term ended in 1937, was chosen for the post as he was thought capable of handling the situation in Bengal after his experience in Ireland.

He took strong measures to suppress the revolutionaries in Bengal and survived an assassination attempt on him. He initiated economic reforms, realising Bengal’s financial state needed urgent attention. He started reforms in jute production and the credit system in villages.

Bengal was awarded provincial autonomy under the Government of India Act, 1935, during his tenure.
