On this day the ship John Palmer, built in Kolkata, reached “Saugor” (Sagar), according to the archives of British Library. It had left Kolkata on December 21, 1810. It weighed 895 tonnes.
John Palmer reached Mauritius on May 7, Saint Helena on July 20 and arrived at the Downs, a ship anchorage near the English Channel September 24.
On July 8, 1812, it sailed for Bengal. Carrying a cargo of cotton mainly, it again stopped at St Helena, where Napoleon would be exiled in 1815. On March 9, 1814, John Palmer was at Ovar, on the Portuguese coast, from where it disappeared and sank with no crew members or passengers surviving.
