On this day the play Nabanatak by Ramnarayan Tarkaratna was performed at the Jorasanko Natyashala at Jorasanko Thakurbari.
The theatre was established by Jyotirindranath Tagore with Gunendranath Tagore and Sarada Prasad Ganguly.
In 1865, Michael Madhusudan Dutt’s plays, including Krishnakumari, were staged here.
Those associated with the theatre then wanted to produce plays on contemporary social issues, such as the condition of women and the impact of the feudal system on peasant society. They issued an advertisement for plays on social problems and offered a prize for the best play.
Ramnarayan Tarakratna won the prize with his play that addressed the issue of polygamy. He received a prize of Rs 200 and a small silver plate.
In the play performed on January 5, 1867, Jyotirindranath Tagore, Sarada Prasad Ganguly and Akshay Mazumder acted. The performance was praised highly in newspapers.
