On this day, under the Treaty of Titalia, the British returned the stretch of land between the Mechi and Teesta to Sikkim.
Earlier, the Raja of Sikkim had been engaged in a conflict with the Gorkhas. From 1780, the Gorkhas had been coming to the Darjeeling area and by the beginning of the 19th century, they had overrun Sikkim till Teesta in the east and had conquered the Terai. Before 1816, the entire territory that was known as British Sikkim had been claimed by Nepal.
After the Anglo-Gorkha War, under the Sugauli Treaty in 1816, Nepal ceded one-third of its territories, which included the area between the Mechi and Teesta rivers, to the British. On February 10, 1817, the British returned the land to the Sikkimese Chogyal under the Treaty of Titalia.
Eventually, in 1935, the British would get Darjeeling on lease from Sikkim.
