The Bengal Club on this day hosted a luncheon in honour of Edward, Prince of Wales, who was touring India. The prince presented the club a signed photograph of himself. But the arrival of the prince in the city on Christmas Eve had been greeted by a hartal called by Gandhi. On reaching Calcutta, the prince saw an empty city, “like a city of the dead”, the London Times reported. Volunteers who had joined the hartal were everywhere in the city and took over the streets. Trains were stopped and markets were closed.
