British army official Sir John Clavering passed away on this day in Kolkata.

He fought in the West Indies during the Seven Years’ War, leading successful campaigns against the French. He returned to England and was rewarded with high positions.

He came to India in 1773 as a member of the Supreme Council of Bengal.

Shortly, with Warren Hastings appointed Governor-General, Clavering was made Commander in Chief in India.

He died two years after he was created a Knight of the Bath. He is buried there in South Park Street Cemetery.
