The ‘Report on the Survey of Calcutta’, by F.W. Simms, C.E., Consulting Engineer to the Government of India and Director of the Railway Department, dated August 14, 1850, contained the following information about the city:
The total Area of Kolkata, within the limits of the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court, in Square Miles: 7.80755843
The total length of the Public Highways within the said limits: 124 Miles 3 Furlongs 3 Poles 7 ½ Feet
Proportion which the private property bears to the whole of Kolkata: 57.59 per Cent.
Proportion which the Maidan and Fort William bears to the whole of Kolkata: 27.03 per Cent
Number of Tanks within the said limits: 1,043
Number of Public Buildings and Offices: 29
Number of Christian Places of Worship of all denominations: 20
Other places of Worship as follows:
Chinese: 1
Greek: 1
Armenian: 1
Jewish: 1
Mahomedan: 74
Hindoo: 167
Number of Buildings belonging to Charitable Institutions: 9
Burial Grounds within the aforesaid limits: 5
Bazars or Markets: 20
Number of Puckah Houses: 13,110
Number of Huts: 49,445
Approximate Population: 3,61,369
