Governor C.V. Ananda Bose on Wednesday ratified the extension of the tenure of Jadavpur University vice-chancellor Suranjan Das.

Das’s name featured on the list of 24 VCs of state-aided universities whose tenure extension came under the scanner because the government had issued the orders without the approval of then governor Jagdeep Dhankhar.

The governor is ex officio chancellor of all state-aided universities.

Das was among the eight VCs who went to Raj Bhavan on Wednesday seeking what education minister Bratya Basu said was a “legitimised extension”.

Like the rest, he tendered his resignation and the governor extended his tenure by three months.

A JU official said the three-month extension that Das got will expire on May 31.

The education department had on June 24, 2021, extended the tenure of Das for a second time by two years or till he turned 70, whichever was earlier.

The retirement age of VCs was increased to 70 so institutes can retain experienced academics, an official in the education department said. An official of Presidency University said the resignation of VC Anuradha Lohia had been emailed to Raj Bhavan. The university is awaiting the governor’s response.

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday visited Fort William, headquarters of the army’s eastern command, and offered a wreath at Vijay Smarak to pay tribute to the soldiers who laid down their lives fighting for the country. Lt Col R.P. Kalita, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, accompanied the chief minister throughout her visit to Fort William.

Mamata interacted with schoolchildren before visiting the war museum at Fort William. The state chief secretary and home secretary accompanied the chief minister. Mamata wrapped up her visit after interacting with Lt Col Kalita and other senior army officers.
