Monday was warm and the weather office predicted warmer days and nights over the next few days.

There is no immediate hope for the revival of winter, said a senior official of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Kolkata.

The maximum temperature recorded on Monday was 28.7 degrees Celsius, which was three degrees above normal. The weather department said the maximum temperature, recorded in the afternoon, is likely to reach 30 degrees in the next two days.

The minimum, which is recorded early in the morning, was 16.9 on Monday, three notches above normal. The minimum could reach 19 in the next two days.

“None of the current factors is favourable for winter. The cold north-westerlies, which bring the chill, are not reaching Kolkata,” said G.K. Das, director of IMD, Kolkata.

Das said winds from north-western India are not flowing into Bengal. There is a possibility of rain in northwest India on January 27. “The winds hover over the area where there is a possibility of rain,” he said.

A second factor, though not as important, responsible for the absence of chill is the formation of a high-pressure zone over the West Bengal-Odisha coast. The formation is sending moisture towards Kolkata, the weather department said.

Das ruled out rain in Kolkata in near future.

“We have to wait till it rains in northwest India. We will observe how the dynamics change after it rains. Only then can we say whether there will be any more cold spell,” Das said.

“As of now, we can only say that the next three or four days will be warmer than what it was today.”

On Monday, it was difficult to spot anyone wearing winter wear. Even late in the evening, many people on the road were in their summer attire.
