The city may have to give a warm send off to 2023. The missing chill that has bothered Kolkatans for the last couple of days is unlikely to return till the end of the year, the Alipore Met office said on Tuesday.
The warm feeling will continue and there is unlikely to be a drop in temperatures. The mornings are likely to remain moderately foggy.
The absence of northwesterly winds, which bring in cold, is being blamed for the warm weather of the last couple of days. The warmer easterly winds, which are also carrying in moisture from the Bay of Bengal, are so intense that the westerly winds are unable to penetrate through them, said a Met official.
Tuesday’s maximum temperature was 26.8 degrees Celsius, one degree above normal. The minimum was 17.1, three notches above normal.
“The temperatures are unlikely to drop till the end of the year, unless something abrupt happens. The chill will not return this year,” said G.K. Das, director of India Meteorological Department (IMD), Kolkata.
Das said the easterly winds, which is blowing in from over the Bay of Bengal and stopped the run of the cold weather, is still dominating over Kolkata.
“The northwesterly winds are stuck in Uttar Pradesh. They are not being able to penetrate through dense easterly winds. This situation is likely to continue for a few more days,” he added.
The moisture-laden easterly winds are also leading to foggy mornings.
