A man who was arrested in Canning in South 24-Parganas district and allegedly fled from south Kolkata’s Alipore court premises in the last week of January was arrested in Bhangar, around 35km from Alipore, on Saturday evening.

Police said Nizam Dhali, 38, was arrested in connection with an attempt to commit dacoity.

He was produced in the Alipore court on January 24.

“After the court production, while he was being escorted to a prison van, Dhali fled,” said an officer of Alipore police station. Samar Polley, an assistant sub-inspector of the Diamond Harbour police district, lodged a complaint with the police station after Dhali allegedly fled.

Based on the complaint, officers of the police station and the Special Operations Group of the Diamond Harbour police district launched a search for Dhali.

“After 12 days, a team of officers found Dhali hiding at his parents-in-laws’ house in Bhangar in South 24-Parganas,” said an officer.

A fresh case has been registered against the accused at Alipore police station. The case for which he was earlier arrested had been filed at Canning police station.

Dhali was produced in the Alipore court on Sunday and remanded in judicial custody.

The police said he would be produced in court for the attempt-to-commit-dacoity case in April.
