A man allegedly masquerading as an officer of Kolkata police was arrested at Metiabruz in southwest Kolkata on Wednesday evening, while another was rounded up from Basirhat in North 24-Parganas on Thursday for allegedly posing as an IPS officer.
Police said a sergeant of the Metiabruz traffic guard, who was on duty on Garden Reach Road on Wednesday evening, spotted a youth riding a blue scooter with a Kolkata police emblem on it and “Police” written just above the emblem.
Suspecting something amiss, the sergeant signalled the rider to stop and park along Garden Reach Road.
“When asked for his identity card, the youth said he had left it behind,” said a police officer. “The scooterist was then asked to name his place of posting. He fumbled and finally admitted that he was not connected with either the state or Kolkata police.”
The rider later identified himself as Ziaul Haque, a resident of Metiabruz.
The police said Haque told them that he had copied the emblem from the internet and got it pasted on his scooter. He got the word “Police” written above the emblem.
Haque apparently told the cops that he had done this to ensure that he was never intercepted for any traffic rule violation. Besides, he believed the logo would give him certain leeway while riding through the city.
Haque was arrested and handed over to Metiabruz police station.
In Basirhat, cops arrested Bakibilla Gazi following a complaint that he had allegedly collected Rs 7 lakh from Debkumar Sarkar of Swarupnagar after promising him a job in the police.
The police said Gazi had allegedly cheated over a dozen youths.
He would win their confidence by posing as an IPS officer posted in the intelligence branch and then collect money by promising them jobs in the police force.
