The CBI on Wednesday questioned expelled youth Trinamul Congress leader Kuntal Ghosh, also an accused in the teachers’ recruitment scam case, about his letter to a CBI judge accusing the central agencies of putting pressure on him to name Trinamul Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee in the case.

Kuntal, whom the ED had arrested in January, has accused central agencies of putting pressure on him to implicate Abhishek and other senior Trinamul Congress leaders.

A team of CBI officials questioned Ghosh at the Presidency Central Correctional Home.

The team comprised two CBI officers of the rank of deputy superintendent of police reached the correctional home in the afternoon and met the superintendent with an appeal to question Kuntal, who is lodged in the same block as Partha Chatterjee, former education minister, arrested on the same charge.

“The team was with Kuntal for several hours inside a room,” said a senior official of the correctional home.

The CBI refused to officially speak about the day’s developments.

Sources said Kuntal was asked to explain the sequence of events leading to interrogators forcing him to name Abhishek and some other party leaders and how he countered the efforts.

All the statements were recorded and later written down in Kuntal’s presence.

Kuntal’s interrogation comes within four days of a CBI team questioning Abhishek Banerjee at Nizam Palace.

Senior CBI officers said they would cross-check Kuntal and Abhishek’s statements and then figure out if both need to be questioned further.
