Three men have been arrested for allegedly duping young men and women by promising them jobs in a private bank and taking money from them.

A team from the cybercrime police station in Salt Lake arrested Abhishek Kumar Ram, 20, Swarajit Mondal, 28, and Monoj Mondal, 30, early on Sunday, a senior officer of the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate said.

The police said the three were arrested based on two complaints — one lodged by a 28-year-old resident of Rajarhat in January and the other by a young woman in December last year.

“The Rajarhat resident was duped out of more than Rs 2 lakh, while the woman lost Rs 2.62 lakh. The fraudsters took money from them posing as representatives of a private bank and promising them jobs in the bank,” the officer said.

“Both complainants had received phone calls from men who identified themselves as representatives of a private bank. They offered them jobs and asked for money citing various fees and charges, which they said were linked to the process of appointment. The complainants believed what the fraudsters said and paid them the money.”

According to another officer, the men running the job racket had also provided appointment letters to the complainants in order to gain their trust. “They had given them appointment letters. The letters bore a logo similar to the one used by the bank. The letterhead and the signatures, too, looked genuine to the complainants. But they turned out to be fake,” the officer said.

The complainants gave the police the cellphone numbers from which they had received the calls.

The cops launched an electronic surveillance on the numbers and tracked down the three men.
